COVID-19: Impact on eCommerce

eCommerce refers to the buying and selling of goods or services using the internet, as well as the transfer of money and data to execute these transactions. eCommerce is often used to refer to the sale of physical products online, and any kind of commercial transaction that is facilitated through the internet.

While eCommerce has gained steady traction over the past couple of decades, the impact of quarantining has catapulted it into hyper drive. Online sales have been growing by triple-digits since social distancing went into effect. Factors like strong and steady growth of internet users, rising awareness related to online shopping, increasing online launching of products, lower prices of goods due to the direct distribution channels, contributed to the growth of the global eCommerce market.

However, this pandemic seemingly has enough potential to change how consumers shop, consume information and even their regards towards how businesses work. COVID-19 has certainly made a huge impact on eCommerce over the past months now that lockdowns, isolation and social distancing measures have been put in place.

Not much is certain today, but we do know that buying behaviour after COVID-19 will rely heavily on eCommerce. Digital efforts will help businesses balance risk by getting them closer to customers, serving their needs, and still keeping the required social distance.

Moreover, after COVID-19, social distancing and lockdown is further expected to push the consumers towards online shopping. However, uncertain consumer demand and supply chain issues can affect the eCommerce industry. The COVID-19 issue can also affect big merchants, which are experiencing a drop in casual shopping, supply chain disruption, and an increase in purchases of essential toiletries, groceries, and other products.

eCommerce may have been optional for most companies in the past but is now fast becoming a deciding factor for a company’s survival. Employees of forward-thinking companies that embrace eCommerce are surely going to have the advantage. Their employees will be using these new eCommerce tools more while working remotely. Suppliers who have prepared for this opportunity by developing new platforms that aggregate and simplify, will assuredly capture a larger market share than competitors not embracing eCommerce; especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We can’t be sure of how our physical shopping will look in the future, but what we do know is that eCommerce, has now a significant and comfortable part in our lives, and will inevitably play an even stronger role in the virtual checkout lanes that drive bottom lines for retailers much faster than expectedd. A well-designed website is the key to doing business in the modern digital world. It  allows you to connect the physical shop  with crisis-proof online sales channels, on the web, mobile, or any other digital channel that’s relevant for your business and industry.
